Miriam Schapiro is considered a pioneer of the feminist movement in art, having established a Feminist Art Program at the California Institute of the Arts with Judy Chicago in the 1970s. This work is a typical example of the collages that she made with fabric, which she called 'femmages.' Schapiro described this form as incorporating collage, assemblage, decoupage and photomontage with the 'traditional women's technique of sewing.' Indeed, the work has the look and feel of a needlepoint or quilt. The heart shape of the piece reinforces these notions.
