The Heckscher Museum of Art’s collection spans 500 years with particular emphasis on art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. American landscape painting and work by Long Island artists, past and present, are particular strengths, as is American and European modernism.

Seascape
This painting of figures enjoying a coastal sunset is among the earliest seascapes in the Museum's collection. Previously conserved using a wax lining, adhesive residues have penetrated the surface from the reverse, dulling and discoloring the canvas. Removal of this lining, the heavy varnish, and surface dirt, replacing the stretcher, and in-painting and re-varnishing will restore the subtle atmospheric coloration of the scene. Minor gesso losses on the frame also require repair.
